Hardy County  is in the Eastern Panhandle, covered by ridges and valleys of the Alleghenies, including some of the North and Shenandoah Mountains. The County was formed in 1786. Consisting of some 576 square miles of land, the county is named to honor Samuel Hardy, a distinguished Virginian. The county is home to both Lost River State Park and George Washington National Forest, It also is the center for a regional Hunting and Fishing area.

Moorefield is the government headquarters for Hardy County, and is the trading center for the upper South Branch Valley. It was chartered in 1777 and named for Conrad Moore, an early settler on whose farm the town is built. Contributing to the economy of the county are livestock, dairy, and fruit farms.

In 1900, the population of Hardy County was 8,449. In a little more than 100 years, the population has grown by only slightly more than 4,000 citizens to 12,669.
